At Dromana, Victoria, Australia, we have designed a Climate Smart Farm containing a 4.85MW solar farm, soil health renovation project, productive planting, pollinator friendly habitat, controlled environment growing sheds, streaming educational data and Indigenous promotion.

RENEWABLE ENERGY FARM
Our proposed 4.85MWp solar farm is expected to generate 6,100,000kWH of clean local energy every year. The solar farm pasture will be managed by grazing sheep.

Mornington Peninsula Shire’s councillors unanimously voted to approve our application for planning permission. The councillors have shown great vision and faith in the Volt Farmer team to deliver this groundbreaking project.
United Energy are working with our engineering team at Clean Technology Partners to finalise the grid connection approval.
Q4 2020 – Q1 2021
The proposed Belectric PEG solar racking system is a low environmental impact solution that uses steel rods and no concrete footings.
Installation is expected to take approximately 15 weeks with local labour.

STREAMING DATA FOR INFORMED DECISION MAKING
Land managers benefit from having clear data and insights into what is occurring in real time. As part of making our Dromana farm ‘Smart’ we are fitting a range of active sensors to measure everything from weather, plant and soil health, moisture and even wildlife.
As stage One we have installed a METOS weather station and soil probe which are already streaming data from the project. This will provide invaluable information for anyone with an interest in solar farms, carbon farming or farm health.
With strong electrical feeder overhead cables along the boundary of the selected site as well as close proximity to the Collins Road Sub-Station the location was positively assessed by United Energy. The paddock is flat with no sensitive flora or fauna as it has been used historically for beef grazing. Mature existing site screening along Collins Road will make the project practically invisible in the overall landscape context and with the additional fruit tree boundary screening the project will continue the food production capacity of the rural site.
The Dromana farm is part of our ‘Climate Smart Farm Project’ initiative which aims to provide rural communities with farm diversification opportunities as well as educational benefits in sustainable agriculture, water management, bio-diversity, natural capital and Indigenous cultural engagement.
Being close to Melbourne and easy to get to the Dromana project is one of our key sites to promote a regenerative management model.
The predicted power from the Dromana project is 6,100,000kWh/year. An average Victorian homes uses 5,475kWh/year (15kWh/day) so this one little farm can power 1200+ homes
Carbon Emission Reduction
6,100 tons of carbon emission reduction/year contributing to a cleaner air future.
To keep the footprint of the solar farm as compact as possible we have opted for a low impact racking solution from Belectric called the PEG system. This uses lightweight galvanised steel rods and brackets to hold the solar panels in place. With over 12,000 solar panels covering about 2.25 hectares the project makes very efficient use of a small paddock. The panels are non-reflective and also set at a very shallow and fixed angle removing any risk of glint or glare.
Our project has been specifically designed with a big plug for a utility scale battery. Battery technology and energy storage systems are developing quickly.
Volt Farmer aims to create projects that produce shared local value with access to clean cheap electricity, regenerative agriculture & horticulture as well as partnerships with stakeholders from the host community.
We also believe in creating opportunites for the local community to collaborate in new and exciting ways.
We chose a unique PV racking system with an exceptional light touch on the landscape. It uses ground anchor rods with no concrete so it can be easily removed. The solar panels sit about 1M off the ground facing East-West and are fixed in position. Absorbing as much of the sunlight as possible the matt surfaced solar panels will provide power for the widest range of the day possible due to their orientation. Using this PV racking system reduces the solar farm’s footprint whilst optimises the clean power capacity of the small paddock.
The solar farm is screened by existing bushland scrub along Collins Road as well as around the perimeter by our proposed fruiting tree screen.
As a regenerative development the project also incorporates onsite sustainable agricultural activities including apple, pear and other fruiting plants. We also intend trialling some hyper efficient climate controlled growing rooms powered by the clean energy. These growing rooms provide micro-enterprise opportunities for leafy greens, mushrooms and a protein farm.

The Story So Far
There is a groundswell of people and businesses looking to take direct action in reducing their carbon footprint as well as reducing their energy costs. Volt Farmer is a regenerative land developer with a passion for shared value projects. We develop land parcels in a way that creates a long term drought proof revenue for farmers whilst boosting opportunities for rural economic growth.
The Mornington Peninsula is one of the most attractive places to live anywhere in the World. Volt Farmer has taken considerable care to design a solar farm project that will integrate into the landscape and one that will increase the agricultural yield of the chosen paddock.
As part of our soil health upgrade for the project we have measured the existing conditions so there is a baseline. The current paddocks consist of a thin layer of topsoil over a granitic silt and then clay. By overseeding with a mixed species fodder and pollinator friendly meadow mix using the SoilKee System we intend to increase the soil’s fertility, carbon levels and yield rates. The Australian SoilKee System achieved the World First soil carbon credtits earlier in 2019 and also brings a range of other soil health benefits which we are very interested in showcasing.
Turning Electricity into Healthy Soil
As regenerative developers we are on a mission to help provide interested farmers with the training, technology and management tools to create long term landscape benefits.
Volt Farmer invests in organising training courses for the host agricultural community. Creating healthy soils, drought resilience and creating carbon credits via regenerative farming practices has now been recognised as a valuable and climate adaption choice.
Volt Farmer works with some of the leading regenerative farming trainers as well as technology partners to provide practical steps for a more sustainable and secure food future.

Soil Health Project
At Dromana we have taken extensive baseline measurements to establish the existing conditions and opportunities of the grazing paddocks.
Using pasture cropping implemented by SoilKee the paddocks will be planted with a diverse range of perennial and annual fodder plants including, tillage radish, barley, peas and cornflour.
The cattle graze this mixed fodder and through their natural fertiliser process the material is then returned to the soil surface in the form of dung and urine.
Based on field trails the SoilKee system accelerates carbon sequestration, soil health and dry matter levels to remarkable levels. This leaves the pasture in a drought resilient and highly productive state with a severing of dependancy of artificial fertilisers.
The SoilKee system achieve the World-First soil carbon credits in accordance with the Paris Agreement and Australian Emission Reduction Fund in 2019.

- Virtual Reality – Working with our partners Ignition Immersive Volt Farmer is developing a series of virtual learning experiences. These VR experiences will help connect visitors to the broader landscape context as they fly over the farm, bushland and local scenery as if from the viewpoint of an eagle. As the eagle returns to the farm it morphs into a high tech drone scanning the landscape for bio-metric data. Other presentations will be target to specific audiences and students around the subject of water management, drought mitigation, regenerative agriculture and Indigenous story telling.
Indigenous Australian Cultural Engagement
Telling the stories and lessons from the perspective of the indigenous custodians of the land who have for thousands of years thrived in Australia’s unique climate. Working directly with the local mob The Bunurong Land Council, a series of interactive and hands on experiences will be modelled to broaden understanding of the rich cultural heritage as well as providing opportunities for a shared future.
